Opening Prayer

"Lord Jesus Christ, who opened the Scriptures to Your disciples and taught them to search diligently, teach us now to study Your Word with wisdom and devotion. Grant us understanding hearts, attentive minds, and obedient wills. Show us how to dig deep into Your truth, meditate on Your law day and night, and apply Your Word to our lives. Through the prayers of all who have loved Your Scriptures, hear our prayer. Amen."

Introduction: the Difference Between Reading and Studying

Two Approaches to Scripture

CASUAL READING:

  • Opens Bible randomly
  • Reads a few verses quickly
  • Closes book
  • Forgets by lunchtime
  • No change in life

SYSTEMATIC STUDY:

  • Plans what to read
  • Studies deeply with tools
  • Meditates and applies
  • Remembers and lives it
  • Life transformed

Which describes YOU?

"You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me." (John 5:39)

Jesus said "SEARCH" - not just "read"!

The Catechism explains:

"St. John Chrysostom considers this text to refer to those who seek precious stones deep in the ground, dig mines, and carefully search for the precious stone until they find them."

Mining for gold requires:

  • TOOLS (pickaxe, shovel)
  • EFFORT (digging deep)
  • TIME (persistent searching)
  • SKILL (knowing where to dig)

Same with Bible study!

This lesson equips you with tools, methods, and skills!

Part I: the Five-step Method

The Complete Process

The Servants Preparation Curriculum gives us a simple guideline:

"In order to truly understand and be affected by the Holy Bible you might like to refer to the following simple guideline: Reading, Meditating, Absorbing, Digesting, Applying."

Let's break down each step:

Step 1: Reading

WHAT: Taking in the Word

HOW:

  • Read OUT LOUD when possible
  • Read SLOWLY (not speed-reading)
  • Read the CONTEXT (verses before and after)
  • Read with ATTENTION (no distractions)

Example:

Bad reading: Quickly scan Psalm 23 while watching TV

Good reading: Sit in quiet place, read Psalm 23 aloud slowly, pausing after each verse

Step 2: Meditating

WHAT: Thinking deeply about what you read

HOW:

  • ASK questions: Who? What? When? Where? Why? How?
  • REPEAT key phrases
  • VISUALIZE the scene
  • CONNECT to other Scriptures

Example with Psalm 23:1:

"The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want."

Questions:

  • Who is my shepherd? (The LORD Himself!)
  • What does a shepherd do? (Feeds, protects, guides)
  • What does "I shall not want" mean? (All my needs met)
  • Who else was a shepherd in the Bible? (David, Moses, Jesus)

Step 3: Absorbing

WHAT: Letting the Word sink deep into your soul

HOW:

  • MEMORIZE key verses
  • RECITE them throughout the day
  • THINK about them during activities
  • Let them FILL your mind

"As digestion is necessary for nourishment, we must also study verses from the Holy Bible and recite them with a loud voice to appreciate their depth. As Pope Shenouda III said: 'Study the psalms by heart and they will protect you.'"

Example:

Memorize: Psalm 70:1 - "Make haste, O God, to deliver me! Make haste to help me, O Lord!"

Recite: Say it when you wake up, while driving, before sleep

Result: It becomes part of you!

Step 4: Digesting

WHAT: Breaking down and processing the Word

"Material food does not strengthen us unless we chew it and digest it. The same thing can be said of the Words of God: we have to eat it and let it go inside us, then we digest it, i.e. we keep the food inside us for a while and do not forget it."

HOW:

  • CHEW: Study it from multiple angles
  • SWALLOW: Accept it into your belief system
  • DIGEST: Let it change your thinking
  • NOURISH: Allow it to strengthen your spirit

Physical food process:

  1. Chew → Break down
  2. Swallow → Take in
  3. Digest → Extract nutrients
  4. Nourish → Build body

Spiritual food process:

  1. Chew → Study deeply
  2. Swallow → Believe it
  3. Digest → Understand it
  4. Nourish → Grow from it

Step 5: Applying

WHAT: Living out what you've learned

HOW:

  • OBEY specific commands
  • CHANGE behaviors
  • MAKE decisions based on it
  • SHARE with others

Example:

Read: "Love your enemies" (Matthew 5:44)
Meditate: What does this mean?
Absorb: Memorize the verse
Digest: Understand God's heart
Apply: Forgive that person who hurt you!

Application = The GOAL of all study!

Part Ii: Practical Study Methods

Method 1: Knowing the Main Outline

"Knowing the subjects and the main outline of the Holy Bible: The main theme is the salvation of the souls and granting them the ability to enjoy eternity through the work of the Holy Trinity."

ALWAYS remember:

  • MAIN THEME: Salvation
  • CENTRAL FIGURE: Christ
  • DIVINE AUTHOR: Holy Trinity
  • ULTIMATE GOAL: Eternity with God

Under this theme:

  • Every story teaches about salvation
  • Every law points to Christ
  • Every prophecy reveals God's plan

"For instance, the story of the dream of Jacob in Genesis cannot be looked at as a story. It actually draws the picture of the work of Incarnation and the opening of Heaven onto earth."

Look DEEPER than surface level!

Method 2: Hearing God's Voice Personally

"When reading the Holy Bible, the reader should start to search out to hear the voice of God talking to him in person based on his own needs and state. The elderly person in his readings will find something in it that fits him/her and the youth when reading the same passage will hear a different message that fits him/her."

The SAME passage speaks differently to different people!

Example: Psalm 23

A CHILD hears: "God takes care of me like a shepherd!"

A TEENAGER hears: "Even when I'm scared, God is with me"

AN ADULT hears: "God provides everything I need"

AN ELDERLY hears: "I will dwell in God's house forever"

SAME Psalm, DIFFERENT personal messages!

"In reading the psalms, everyone has spiritual nourishment and wealth for the soul as if the psalms were written for them, because of the beauty of their meaning, their depth, and their simplicity at the same time."

Ask: "What is God saying to ME through this passage TODAY?"

Method 3: Writing Down Contemplations

"The best way to read the Holy Bible is when the reader uses a notepad beside him and writes down his/her thoughts and contemplations or some points that he/she needs clarification on."

START A BIBLE JOURNAL!

What to write:

  1. Date and passage read
  2. Key verse that stood out
  3. Questions you have
  4. Insights God showed you
  5. Application - What will you do?
  6. Prayer based on the passage

Example entry:

Date: February 13, 2026
Passage: Psalm 23
Key Verse: "He restores my soul" (v.3)
Question: How does God restore my soul?
Insight: Through His Word, prayer, and sacraments
Application: Will spend 30 min in prayer today
Prayer: "Lord, restore my weary soul. Lead me in Your paths."

Benefits:

  • Track your spiritual growth
  • Remember God's lessons
  • See patterns over time
  • Have a record to review

Method 4: Studying One or Two Verses Daily

"As digestion is necessary for nourishment, we must also study verses from the Holy Bible and recite them with a loud voice to appreciate their depth."

DEEP not WIDE!

Better to study:

  • ONE verse deeply
  • Than TEN verses shallowly

How to study one verse:

Example: John 3:16

1. READ it multiple times
2. BREAK it down:

  • "For God" - Emphasizes WHO loves
  • "so loved" - How MUCH He loves
  • "the world" - Loves EVERYONE
  • "that He gave" - Love shown by GIVING
  • "His only begotten Son" - Gave His BEST
  • "that whoever believes" - Universal OFFER
  • "in Him" - Must be IN Christ
  • "should not perish" - Saves from DEATH
  • "but have everlasting life" - Gains ETERNITY

3. MEMORIZE it
4. PRAY it back to God
5. APPLY it - believe and share the gospel!

One verse can change your life!

Part Iii: Types of Bible Studies

The Orthodox Study Bible includes:

  • Patristic commentary notes
  • Historical background
  • Theological insights
  • Cross-references
  • Maps and charts

Why Orthodox Study Bible?

  • Maintains Orthodox interpretation
  • Includes Church Fathers' wisdom

Tool 2: Bible Commentaries

"We need the explanations of the Saints"

Recommended Orthodox commentaries:

  • Ancient Christian Commentary series (which includes patristic commentaries)
  • Patristic commentary series
  • Church Father homilies on books of Bible

How to use commentaries:

  1. Read passage FIRST (form your own thoughts)
  2. THEN consult commentary
  3. Compare insights
  4. Learn from saints' wisdom

Never replace personal study with commentaries!

Use them to ENHANCE, not REPLACE your study!

Tool 3: Bible Dictionaries

"Bible Dictionaries"

What they provide:

  • Definitions of biblical terms
  • Historical background
  • Cultural context
  • Archaeological findings

When to use:

  • Unknown words or names

"Bible Atlases"

What they provide:

  • Maps of biblical lands
  • Trade routes
  • Battle locations
  • Journey paths

Why important:

  • Lists every word in the Bible
  • Shows every verse where word appears
  • Helps find forgotten verses
  • Enables word/topic studies

Example:

  • Look up "love"
  • Find all verses with "love"
  • Study what Bible says about love

Strong's Concordance also includes:

  • Original Hebrew/Greek words
  • Definitions
  • Word numbers for reference

Part V: Developing a Daily Bible Reading Plan

Why You Need a Plan

Without a plan:

  • Read randomly
  • Miss large portions
  • No consistency
  • Easy to skip

With a plan:

  • Systematic coverage
  • Regular habit
  • Complete Bible over time
  • Disciplined approach

Plan Option 1: Read Bible in One Year

Old Testament once + New Testament twice + Psalms & Proverbs once

Daily reading: About 20 minutes

  • 3 chapters Old Testament
  • 1 chapter New Testament
  • 1 Psalm or Proverb

Benefits:

  • Complete Bible coverage
  • Manageable daily amount
  • Builds consistent habit

Plan Option 2: Chronological Reading

Read Bible in order events happened

Example:

  • Start with Job (during patriarchs)
  • Then Genesis
  • Exodus
  • Continue through history

Benefits:

  • Understand timeline
  • See progression of history
  • Context makes sense

Plan Option 3: Book-by-book Study

Read one book completely before moving to next

Example:

  • Week 1-2: John
  • Week 3-4: 1 John
  • Week 5-6: Acts
  • Week 7-8: Romans

Benefits:

  • Deep understanding of each book
  • Mastery of structure
  • Complete themes

Plan Option 4: Topic-based Reading

Focus on one topic per month

Example:

  • January: Prayer (all verses on prayer)
  • February: Love (all verses on love)
  • March: Faith (all verses on faith)

Benefits:

  • Comprehensive topic knowledge
  • Practical application
  • Thematic expertise

Part Vi: Living the Bible

More Than Knowledge

The Servants Preparation Curriculum emphasizes:

"The beauty and strength of our holy fathers of the past is 'living the Bible', not just reading it. How can this be achieved? Meditation and memorization of verses, as well as obeying and living the commandments; through these practices the word of God enters into the depths of a person and becomes a part of him."

Three elements of LIVING the Bible:

1. MEDITATION

  • Think about it constantly
  • Let it fill your mind
  • Ponder its meaning

2. MEMORIZATION

  • Hide it in your heart
  • Have it ready for use
  • Never without God's Word

3. OBEDIENCE

  • DO what it says
  • LIVE the commandments
  • BE the Word in action

Result: "The word of God enters into the depths of a person and becomes a part of him"

Taking Bible as Source of Joy

"Take the Holy Bible as a source of joy in your life: 'Moreover He said to me, "Son of man, eat what you find; eat this scroll, and go, speak to the house of Israel." So I opened my mouth, and He caused me to eat that scroll. And He said to me, "Son of man, feed your belly, and fill your stomach with this scroll that I give you." So I ate, and it was in my mouth like honey in sweetness.' (Ezekiel 3:1-3)"

Notice the ORDER:

1. EAT the scroll FIRST
2. THEN go speak

Meaning:

  • Be FILLED with God's Word
  • THEN share with others
  • Personal nourishment BEFORE ministry

Notice the SWEETNESS:

"So I ate, and it was in my mouth like honey in sweetness."

God's Word should be:

  • SWEET, not bitter
  • JOY, not burden
  • DELIGHT, not duty

Transformation Through Scripture

"Persistence in the enjoyment of reading the Holy Bible leads to a constant change in the way a person thinks and lives his life. 'But be transformed by the renewing of your mind' (Romans 12:2)."

Regular Bible study leads to:

TRANSFORMED THINKING

  • New perspectives
  • Renewed mindset
  • Christ-like thoughts

CHANGED LIVING

  • Different choices
  • Holy behavior
  • Godly character

HOPE AND OPTIMISM

"Through the Holy Bible the person lives a life filled with hope and optimism and expects all good things, as the Psalm says 'Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me All the days of my life; And I will dwell in the house of the LORD Forever' (Psalm 23:6)."

Part Vii: Studying with the Church

The Status of Bible in Orthodox Church

"Our Coptic Orthodox church is a first degree church of the book. It is a church that is closely related to the Holy Bible. Its doctrines and beliefs are completely derived from the Holy Bible."

What this means:

"First degree church of the book"

  • Bible is our PRIMARY source
  • All doctrines FROM Scripture
  • All practices BASED on Scripture

Evidence:

"You will see many expressions in the liturgy and hymns that are taken to the letter from the Holy Bible. The whole structure of personal worship including prayers, fasting and donations all conform to the instructions of the Holy Bible."

Everything connects to Scripture:

  • Liturgy
  • Hymns
  • Prayers
  • Fasting
  • Almsgiving
  • Sacraments

Reverence for Scripture

"The Holy Bible is greatly respected in our church, we kiss it and bow our heads in respect when we read the Holy Bible, and we stand in awe and listen carefully to the Holy Bible."

Physical reverence shows:

  • KISS the Gospel
  • BOW our heads
  • STAND when read
  • LISTEN carefully

This teaches:

  • Scripture is HOLY
  • God is SPEAKING
  • Treat with HONOR
  • Receive with REVERENCE

Train your students in this reverence!

Church as Final Authority

"Even material relationships must abide with the instructions of the Holy Bible which is our main source for everything in our church. The church does not accept any other book or any other source that conflicts with the Holy Bible. The Holy Bible is the book of life of the church. The church does not accept any distortion or changes in it."

The Church:

  • SUBMITS to Scripture
  • REJECTS what conflicts
  • PRESERVES accuracy
  • PROTECTS from distortion

When you study personally:

  • Check with Church teaching
  • Use Orthodox commentaries
  • Avoid private interpretation
  • Stay within Orthodox tradition
